Meadowbrook Church is a congregation of about 500 people, located in Wauwatosa just beyond the City of Milwaukee’s western boundary. How did we come into existence, and why are we located in just this spot?
Our roots are in one of the largest churches in the area, Elmbrook Church.

During the 1980s and 90s, Elmbrook grew at a fast pace. Their vision for growth included the desire to start like-minded daughter congregations throughout the Milwaukee area. Over that span of time, core groups of “church starters” were invited to help launch new congregations in the east, far west, north, and south suburbs of Milwaukee.
The vision to start Meadowbrook in its location was in recognition of a large unchurched population in the area halfway between Elmbrook and Eastbrook: essentially a 3-mile radius around a center point located at about 76th Street and Burleigh Road. When it eventually became time to buy property for a permanent location, Meadowbrook itself decided to target the area between 76th and 124th from Bluemound Road north to Hampton Avenue.
Meadowbrook’s core group began meeting for prayer in 1987. They began by holding weekly prayer meetings at Hart Park. In the fall of 1988 they started holding worship services at the West Suburban YMCA. It soon became apparent that there was a sufficient nucleus committed to establishing a new church. The next year they called Mark Seversen, a director of university ministries in the area, to be Meadowbrook’s first pastor. Mark led the church through a 13-year period of growth and maturation. During those years, John Mackett was invited to join the staff as an associate pastor, and later Mark Werner came on board to work with the youth.
In 2001 Mark Seversen accepted a pastoral position at a church in Kansas City. In 2002 the church Council and membership affirmed John Mackett as God’s choice to take over the reins as Senior Pastor. Mark Werner moved from youth pastor to overseer of adult ministries. In 2006 a new youth director, Tom Slye, joined our team and in 2007 Amy Sommerville joined the Meadowbrook Staff to oversee children’s ministries.
Our most recent historical landmark was the culmination of a three-year building fund drive that took place concurrently with the search for a suitable property in the target area mentioned above. In 2003 we decided to buy our current building at 70th and Maple, which for over 40 years had been the home of Bethel Assembly of God.
